Abstract

This chapter describes the first step in the implementation of the Program Ler + Dá Saúde (Read + Health) Project in a healthcare centre in Portugal. It aims to establish a protocol for promoting health literacy in the healthcare visits of families with babies aged 0-18 months. In so doing, it illustrates, using concrete examples, how literacy was integrated in routine consultations by extending the guidelines contained in the National Child and Youth Health Plan. The materials and procedures proposed are intended to be a part of the activities and strategies that health professionals, namely family nurses, should adopt in their care of babies and their parents.
