Abstract
Nearly half of all students in primary and secondary school in the United States have experienced trauma. As a result, school counselors' preparedness to work with those students may affect the traumatized youths' overall mental, academic, social, and physical well-being. This phenomenological study explored the degree to which elementary school counselors perceived their level of preparedness to work with children who have experienced trauma. Elementary school counselors within a Texas urban school district completed an in-depth interview. The emerging themes from this study delineated consistent perceptions of inadequate graduate school training to work with traumatized youth. Implications for counselor educators are discussed.
