Abstract
Over the last decade, the higher education sector around the world has been undergoing rapid transformation. Subsequently, the sector has struggled to adapt and address potential systemic threats affecting learning and teaching. In recent years, a considerable body of research has focused on identifying and documenting those challenges and proposing ways to address them. Central to the ways of addressing challenges are learning technologies. Over the years, several institutions have systematically deployed new technologies to support learning and teaching. Institutions have recently begun to investigate new types of data to better understand and manage systemic difficulties, as well as to promote effective decision-making. This chapter examines the dynamic changes in higher education and the issues that have resulted from these developments in the 21st century. It will next look at how data, specifically big data and analytics, may assist the industry in adapting to its changing environment.
