Abstract

This chapter seeks to explore the phenomenon of colonization and how it may have disrupted the precolonial harmony that existed between deaf and hearing people. The chapter uses the example of the deaf in Zimbabwe because for this particular group vestiges of not considering them as disabled remain in the collective unconscious of many. It analyzes Afrocentric, Ubuntu-based views of the condition of not hearing and teases out the possible signature pedagogical contributions of the philosophy of Ubuntu.
