Abstract

Purpose: Metatherapy is an important tool for practicing clinicians to implement when conducting dysphagia rehabilitation. Yet, few clinicians receive explicit training regarding how to implement metatherapy effectively with patients. As such, metatherapy skills are typically developed implicitly over time with experience. This tutorial will provide an overview of what metatherapy is and will provide instructions regarding how to implement metatherapeutic techniques for dysphagia rehabilitation by providing readers with a rehabilitation framework, case study examples, and techniques for conducting effective metatherapy. Conclusion: Dysphagia practitioners may use the framework and techniques provided in this tutorial to effectively implement metatherapy into dysphagia rehabilitation to enhance patient engagement in the therapy process and to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
