Abstract
Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to illustrate the use of a psycholinguistic model of aphasia as a guide to inform clinical management in a case of left parietal stroke, in a typical hospital outpatient setting.
Method:
This study used a case report with retrospective chart review.
Results:
A 79-year-old man developed acute speaking difficulty and was diagnosed with a left ischemic parietal stroke. A psycholinguistic approach was applied to conceptualize the underlying nature of the aphasia as well as to navigate various treatment decisions. Based upon the resultant aphasia profile demonstrating broad phonological impairment of word production, phonomotor treatment was implemented.
Conclusion:
Incorporating psycholinguistic theories and practices into the clinical management of aphasia can provide clinicians with a relevant framework to guide clinical decision making through precise delineation of the nature of aphasia and selection of correspondingly targeted interventions.
