Abstract
Objective: to explore the characteristics of bereaved people who manifest maladaptive grieving. Materials and Methods: secondary analysis. Convenience sample of 251 bereaved people. Data collection with a survey composed of sociodemographic and health characteristics, and those related to loss, Inclusion of other in self scale, Continuing Bonds Scale, Nursing Diagnoses. Descriptive analysis, Mann-Whitney U, Cramer V were used; p<0.05. Principal results: 55.40% expressed maladaptive grieving. Significant differences between maladaptive grieving and other types of grieving in perception of closeness to the deceased and continuing bonds. Significant associations between maladaptive grieving with kinship with the deceased person, time elapsed since the loss, receiving help to overcome the loss, being the main caregiver. Conclusion: the characteristics of bereaved people who manifest maladaptive grieving depend on specific personal, social and cultural circumstances.
