Abstract
Open and endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are being extensively practised today. Comparison of both endovascular (EVAR) and open repair (OSR) in randomised controlled trials confirmed that early gains in survival and aneurysm-related mortality tend to vanish after four years of follow-up. The aim of this paper is to review open and endovascular repair techniques, their early and late benefits, based on scientific evidence and experience from an academic vascular unit, and to assess present and future strategy for management of both intact and ruptured AAA.
