Abstract
ABSTRACT Brokeback Mountain is the first gay film to achieve major box-office success, testament to the progressive integration of homosexuality in liberal North American communities. The film can furthermore be argued to be the first tragedy in Ang Lee's film- making career, its poignant outcome foreshadowed in its opening shots.
