Abstract

Social work with chronically ill people, including those with oncological conditions, has been implemented in our country for a long time. Although it remains in the shadow of academic considerations, the need for it will increase with the ageing of the Polish population and the accompanying upward trend in cancer cases. The social worker is an indispensable source of multifaceted support for many people, not only single people but also whole families. Based on the data collected during the in-depth interviews with social workers with experience working with cancer patients, it has become possible to provide an insight into the ‘oncological social work’ practised in our country. The psychosocial activities undertaken at different stages of the illness trajectory and life cycle show the resources of social work in mobilising psychological and social potential despite the disruption that ‘cancer’ makes in the biography of the patient and their family.
