1980 COUP AND ITS ECHOES IN THE FOREİGN PRESS

Abstract

A new era began with the military intervention in Turkey on September 12, 1980. New changes took place in the political, economic, social and cultural life of the country. Events, censors and bans have kept the agenda busy. How this situation that occurred in the country would reflect on the foreign policy of the country was one of the most important topics of the agenda. After the National Security Council announced that they would commit to the alliances and treaties that Turkey is involved in, Western countries were the eyes turned to the statements. Western countries showed a mild approach to military intervention. Similar statements were made, arguing that the military had to intervene in the elected government. Another featured topic of the foreign policy was the Cyprus issue. Especially the importance of negotiation between the Greek Cypriot Administration and the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus was mainly focused on. Another important issue was the question of what would be Turkey’s attitude towards Greece’s return to NATO’s military wing. The last important issue was the measures to be taken against terrorist incidents in Turkey. It has been announced that whether the measures to be taken will be sufficient will be followed by the Western countries. This study aimed to examine the repercussions of the 1980 coup in Western countries. For this purpose, it was tried to be understood and explained by examining the periodical publications of the period how the 1980 coup in Turkey resonated in Western countries.
