Revealing the gaps in solar spectrum: a DIY spectrometer for observing Fraunhofer lines

Abstract

Abstract The observation of spectral gaps in the solar spectrum provides valuable information about the composition of the Sun and the Earths atmosphere. This paper outlines how a simple setup with a Bic Shine pen and a modified CD can be used as a simple spectrometer with sufficient resolution to observe Fraunhofer lines. The experiment allows individuals to engage in first-hand observation of the spectral gaps, promoting a deeper understanding of the underlying physical principles and their implications in physics and astronomy. From the absorption lines in the Sun’s spectrum, we can infer that stars, including distant ones, share similar characteristics. These absorption lines are a result of the interaction between light and the elements present in the Sun’s atmosphere. Since stars are essentially similar to our Sun, their spectra also exhibit absorption lines, allowing us to extend our knowledge and affirm that stars are, in fact, suns themselves.
