Fracture mechanics describes the susceptibility of structures and components to failure due to fracture, fatigue, creep, wear, or corrosion, as well as the prevention and control of crack propagation. Nigeria lacks sound fracture mechanics approaches. The frequent failure of structure is evident, particularly in the building sector, where there have been reported cases of building collapse resulting in the loss of lives and property. However, it is generally attributed to a design deficiency, the use of substandard materials or wrongful selection of materials, inferior quality control methods, inadequate maintenance programs, and the absence of standard regulatory bodies. There’s a growing need for structures that poses structural integrity to be able to withstand and support a given structural load without deforming or fracturing. This can be achieved through the meticulous selection of base materials, development, and implementation of a fracture control plan, the unique design process in the construction and manufacturing industry.
