Non-conventional machining of SiC reinforced Aluminum metal matrix composites: A Review

Abstract

Abstract Metal Matrix Composites or MMCs are among the advanced materials in which lightweight metallic matrices are combined with fibres or particles of hard ceramics as reinforcements. Due to their enhanced properties compared to the monolithic metal alloys, these materials are gaining rapid importance in aerospace, automotive, energy, defense & sports industries. Silicon Carbide reinforced Aluminum MMCs are widely used because of its low cost, good hardness & corrosion resistance properties. However, during conventional machining of these materials, the reinforcement phase causes workpiece damage, excessive tool wear and elevated cutting force owing to their high hardness and abrasive nature. To improve machinability conditions of the Al/SiC MMCs, performance of some non-conventional machining processes like Electrical Discharge Machining, Wire Electrical Discharge Machining, Electrochemical Machining, Laser Beam Machining & Abrasive Water Jet Machining were investigated over the last few decades & were found to yield very good results with promising future scopes. This review paper focuses on summarizing the machining performances, challenges encountered and suitable optimization techniques while using non-conventional machining processes for Al/SiC MMCs.
