Understanding in depth …the origin of the nucleon mass, the nucleon spin, and the emergent properties of a dense gluon system… (Electron-ion collider Yellow Report, arXiv:2103.05419v) represents the frontier of modern hadron physics, both on the experimental and theoretical side. In this contribution, after briefly outlining the above challenges in view of the various experimental facilities planned in the near future, some insights into the non-perturbative regime of QCD will be provided. In particular, the most recent achievements in the description of the pion, playing a fundamental role in the hadron dynamics, will be illustrated within a genuinely relativistic quantum-field theoretical framework, based on actual solutions of the homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation.
