A collar-shaped fiber ring (CSFR) with a single mode fiber for refractive index (RI) measurement is proposed and fabricated. Three CSFRs, with fiber lengths of 3.0 cm, 3.5 cm, and 4.0 cm, were fabricated and tested. The maximum RI sensitivity is higher than 630 nm RIU−1 when the RI value is 1.398. Moreover, the temperature experimental result shows that the CSFR is insensitive to temperature in the range of 10 °C–100 °C. Particularly, CSFRs are easily produced without any devices such as a fusion splicer or UV laser system.
