Morphology, morphometrics, and some qualitative parameters of silver rasbora (Rasbora argyrotaenia) sperm

Abstract

Abstract The aims of this study are to inform the morphology, morphometrics, and some qualitative parameters of silver rasbora (Rasbora argyrotaenia) sperm as the knowledge that can be used as a basis for further research. This study was conducted in March until April 2018 in Wet Laboratory and Instrument Laboratory Universitas Airlangga, Banyuwangi Campus, Indonesia. A total of 10 male of silver rasbora with a weight of 4.11 ± 0.31g and length 7.78 ± 0.20 cm was induced using Ovaprim™ at a dose of 0.35 mL/g body weight to stimulate spermiation. Abdominal gentle stripping was done after 10 hours to collect sperm. The observed parameters are sperm morphology, head length and tail length as morphometric parameters, thickness, colour, and smell. Morphological description based on observation; a sperm consists of an oval head, a cylindrical midpiece, and a thin elongated tail. Averages of head length and tail length are 1.64 ± 0.25 mm and 30.57 ± 2.87 mm. Some qualitative parameters of sperm were observed include thick consistency, milky white colour, and fishy odour.
