Abstract
Modernity has inevitably gained the community’s consent to modify their perspectives and behaviours according to the contemporary conditions. The urban architecture, which is a reflection (expression) of the community’s modernity, can identify the character of the urban village community and its accompanying modernization, as happened in Kampung Mojo in Surakarta. In this context, it is considered important and relevant to bring up the discussion about the pressure of rationality on the morality of society in modernism with the case of the survival of public space in the community that occurs in Kampung Mojo in Surakarta. The method of observation and active participation is the right way to explore the data to be analysed in order to reveal Kampung Mojo as a form of ideal urban settlement architecture in Surakarta that is able to maintain the morality and social space of the community in its public space.
