Abstract
The concept of grey spaces in architectural design has been a significant aspect of early, primarily Asian architectural traditions. Contemporary Thai architecture draws its understanding and utilization of grey spaces from the tropical context, aiming to create semi-outdoor spaces that offer comfort and extended functionalities. This paper explores whether and how the theory and knowledge of grey spaces have influenced contemporary Thai architecture. The research includes building analysis of realized buildings and interviews with three architects who explicitly or implicitly address the grey space concept in their theoretical and design approaches. Results present ideas of grey spaces that can be successfully translated into contemporary Thai architecture, addressing aspects of design that may be unique to the region and playing a vital role in creating functional and socially fitting buildings. The discussion highlights the importance of designing contemporary architecture that enhances the user’s experience by promoting interaction with the environment and community. The findings affect architects, designers, and policymakers who aim to create sustainable and culturally appropriate architecture.
