Abstract
The current structures of large organizations exist because of a
particular history. The basic organizational model is a military one
– because, for most of history, the only really large
organizations were the military and the church (and for much of that
time, they were not dissimilar). The large industrial or commercial
organization is a recent phenomenon – certainly a product of this
century, arising from the change from craft working to mass production.
