Abstract
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the licensing and launch of high‐speed mobile telecommunications networks in Europe.Design/methodology/approachThe research is based upon data collection from multiple sources, triple cross‐checked, on licensing and launch dates and other relevant information.FindingsA series of tables are presented covering a variety of relevant data such as licence and launch dates, megahertz awarded, number of licensees and methods of awards.Research limitations/implicationsDespite triple‐checking, some uncertainties remain about the precise numbers in a limited number of cases.Originality/valueNo one has ever conducted a detailed investigation of this kind before.
