The Network of Networks Project: electronic communications and CD‐ROM data storage ‐ some challenges for information delivery

Abstract

Describes the Network of Networks project in Latin America, the objective of which is to improve access by the end‐user to existing information resources through an integrated approach to network support and development. Discusses its experiments with various information technologies including electronic communications, through AlterNex/Internet. Describes the use of electronic conferences to coordinate and discuss information services and product delivery, cooperative CD‐ROM production, marketing and information management. Anticipates the future use of CD‐ROM for full‐text document delivery.

A fifth component of animation, coordination and evaluation of the Network of Networks Project is the responsibility of ALIDE (Peru).

2. 2Through a seminar on the use of electronic mail and international data communication networks offered by AlterNex to the representatives of the networks of the project, it was possible in some cases to transfer the consulting by the coordinators of the networks to their users and focal points (multiplying effect).

3. 3The conference with information brokers was held in mid‐June 1995. The purpose was to bring the networks in contact with commercial information brokers, in order to exchange with the brokers ideas and proposals to identify the best options for the marketing of networks’ information products and services.
