PurposeThe purpose of this article is to describe the development of Rapid, a successful document supply system in the USA.Design/methodology/approachThe paper provides a descriptive analysis.FindingsFinds that Rapid reduces costs and speeds up the fulfillment of document supply requests by using a well integrated system that precisely identifies holdings statements of participating libraries.Originality/valueGives a good insight into the workings of a cooperative document supply system in the USA with possible applications in other countries.
