Abstract
Electrodeposition of zinc‐nickel alloys from an acid chloride bath containing benzyl triethanol ammonium bromide (BTABr) was investigated under optimized plating conditions, particularly, temperature, current density, pH and metal ion ratios in the bath. The BTABr concentration produced alloy composition of 17‐ 21 per cent by the weight of nickel. The surface structure of the deposit was found to be (Ni3Zn22), which exhibited superior corrosion resistance, high hardness and a smooth, uniform and fine‐grained deposit. The surface properties of BTABr were studied through surface tension measurements of the solution/air interface. Data of some surface and thermodynamic properties of its compound were calculated. The results obtained show that BTABr improves electrodeposition of zinc‐nickel alloys.
