Abstract
Omphalitis, an infection of the umbilical cord in neonates, is a critical concern in Latin America due to its potential serious complications, such as septic arthritis and systemic sepsis. In developing countries, the incidence is notably high, highlighting the need to investigate the factors that contribute to this condition. The objective of this study is to analyze the risk factors associated with omphalitis and its complications, especially septic arthritis, in neonates. A synthetic analytical study was developed to process and interpret the information found and it was illustrated in a comparative table between Latin America and Europe. The deductive-inductive method was also used to reach the causes and the empirical method that covers the review. A survey was carried out. to 85 mothers residing in Riobamba. As a result, it was found that the intervention with chlorhexidine is effective in preventing infections and that mothers have little knowledge of the subject and care for the umbilical cord based on customs. The variability in cord care methods and prevalence of infections indicate the need to standardize practices and improve education on umbilical cord management. Regular medical care and the use of sterile methods are essential to reduce the risk of serious complications, in addition to developing prevention strategies
