Clinical-epidemiological characterization of cataract in people over 60 years of age

Abstract

A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out consisting of the epidemiological clinical characterization of senile cataract in patients over 60 years of age seen in the ophthalmology office in the municipality of Viñales Pinar del Río, in the period from 2015 to 2016. A total of 546 patients between the ages of 60 years and older with a diagnosis of senile cataract and visual acuity less than 0,3 in the Sellen chart were studied by means of a non-probabilistic sampling of type subjects. A structured interview was applied to the entire sample. We arrived at the following results: significant predominance of the female sex and the age group 60 to 69 years, the most frequent accompanying systemic disease in these patients is diabetes mellitus, among the most frequent risk factors identified by the patients is smoking, within the same group predominate patients with grade I of validism, according to the way they live we observed great predominance in patients who live accompanied and according to the visual acuity predominance of the group greater than 0,3.
