Abstract

Introduction: the symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA) can usually be controlled, although joint damage cannot be reversed. Be permanently active, maintain a healthy weight and receiving certain treatments can slow the progression of the disease and help improve joint pain and function. This research will review the different treatments available for osteoarthritis with a special focus on hydrolyzed collagen supplements. Objectives: a systematic review will be carried out using different scientific articles to analyze the available evidence on the effectiveness of collagen supplements in the treatment of of the symptoms of osteoarthritis, as well as its relationship with the structure and function of articular cartilage. Additionally, limitations and challenges in research on hydrolyzed collagen supplements for osteoarthritis will be discussed. Method: for this scientific work, an exhaustive search of scientific works was carried out in the electronic databases MEDLINE (PubMed); Trip database and Dynamed for literature on the use of collagen supplements in osteoarthritis. First, the filters related to osteoarthritis and type II collagen were used. The terms used for the search were Mesh terms (osteoarthritis[MeSH Terms])AND (collagen type ii[MeSH Terms]) and then relating these terms to (articular cartilage[MeSH Terms]) AND (cartilage disease[MeSH Terms]) AND (nutraceutical[MeSH Terms]) the “Abstract” was read to focus on the effectiveness of treatment with collagen supplements for the symptoms of osteoarthritis
