Abstract
Resumen: Este ensayo examina la visualización de la historia y la ficción en la edición ilustrada de los Episodios nacionales de Galdós (1881–1885) para aportar un marco para comprender el compromiso del novelista con la historia. Estudiar el texto gráfico junto a los comentarios autorreflexivos del narrador-testigo de la primera serie de novelas, Gabriel Araceli, resalta los problemas inherentes a la relación entre historia y ficción. Las ilustraciones, por un lado, falsifican la historia al proporcionar pruebas ficticias de los acontecimientos pasados que se narran. Por otro, autentifican la ficción simulando la existencia de referentes que la narración pretende representar. Abstract: This essay examines the visualization of history and fiction in the illustrated edition of Galdós’s Episodios nacionales (1881–1885) to offer a framework for understanding the novelist’s engagement with history and historiography. Studying the graphic text alongside the self-reflective commentaries of the initial series’s first-person narrator, Gabriel Araceli, emphasizes the problems inherent to the relationship between history and fiction. The illustrations, on the one hand, falsify history by providing fictional evidence for the past events recounted. On the other, they authenticate the fiction by simulating the existence of external referents that the narrative purports to represent.
