Abstract

The responses to light and temperature variations of the gametophytes and early sporophytes ofLaminaria hyperboreanwere compared in culture with those of its main competitors in Britain, namelyL. digitata, L. saccharinaandSaccorhiza polyschides. Some undeveloped gametophytes of all species are able to survive in the dark for at least 80 days.
