Abstract
The Hitachi HV-1 electron microscope was designed to be a prototype for a truly high vacuum instrument. The basic concepts for the design were developed from experience obtained in the conversion of a Siemens Elmiskop I at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and of a JEM 6-C at New York Medical College. The pumping system was designed and constructed by Perkin-Elmer-Ultek in Palo Alto and the column and electronics were designed and constructed by Hitachi at the Naka Works in Mito, Japan. The pumping system and the column were first joined for preliminary tests at the Naka Works. The system was then shipped to New York where it has been installed at New York Medical College. Final performance tests are still in progress.
