Abstract
There exists an impressive body of data on quiescent prominences, both a copious number of theoretical investigations as well as an abundance of observational information. Still, controversy persists as to how such prominences form and how they disintegrate. It is the purpose of this paper to review the most prevalent hypotheses and theories that treat the formation and support of quiescent prominences, and to review current ideas concerning their stability. By exposing stability criteria, an understanding of how these prominences disintegrate also may be obtained.
