Abstract
A surprisingly large number of texts, many heretofore lost to us, were discovered in a lacquer box in Tomb Three at Mawangdui. (For a summary of the excavation and contents of the tomb see Early China 1[1975]:10-15.) The scrolls had fused together as a result of being tightly packed in the lacquer box; after separation, two of the scrolls were found to contain six separate treatises on medicine as well as a set of illustrations of therapeutic calisthenics.
