Abstract
SUMMARYMean progesterone concentrations were measured in the peripheral plasmas of Merino and Border Leicester × Merino ewes which were fed from day 2 to day 16 after mating on rations designed to provide twice maintenance (2 M), maintenance (M) and one quarter maintenance (¼ M) of food requirements. Mean plasma progesterone concentrations were consistently higher in the ¼ ewes than in the M or 2 M ewes whether they had two corpora lutea (CL) and two embryos surviving or one CL with either one embryo surviving or no embryo surviving, and tended to be lower in the 2 M than M ewes. It is concluded that there is an inverse relationship between levels of nutrition and progesterone within an oestrous cycle in ewes.
