Abstract
The concept of compassion fatigue (CF) has evolved since 1992. It has been described as the natural consequence of working with traumatized clients or those who have experienced extremely stressful events in tandem with the level of empathy practitioners have for such clients. CF is a state of tension and preoccupation with the individual or cumulative trauma of clients. This article reviews standard CF progression for stressed physicians along with burnout differentiation, CF symptom identification, and preventative management strategies.
