Abstract

This study aimed to determine middle school students' attitudes towards coding. For this purpose, a study was conducted on 120 students studying in a state secondary school in Eastern Anatolia. In addition, the study investigated how students' attitudes towards coding differ in terms of their desire to take courses, their gender, class level and economic level. In the study, an attitude scale towards coding developed by Akkuş, Özhan, and Kan (2019) was used to collect data. Easily accessible case sampling, one of the non-random sampling methods, was used in the study. All data collected from the participants were analyzed according to the 5% significance level. According to the results of the research, it was observed that 73% of the students' attitudes towards coding were positive. In addition, it was found that most of the students (82%) wanted to take coding courses. In addition, the attitude scores of the willing group were found to be statistically significantly higher. On the other hand, it was concluded that gender does not have an effect on attitude towards coding. Similarly, there was no difference in terms of scale scores between the groups divided according to grade level. Finally, it was understood that the economic level of the students did not have any effect on their coding attitude scores.
