Abstract
A survey of heterotrophic aerobic bacteria, total coliforms, faecal coliforms and faecal streptococci was performed on water samples from 32 wells in the desert west of Basrah city. Counts of bacteria were not found to be correlated with environmental factors. Faecal contamination of wells was mostly of animal sources as indicated by the low FC/PS ratios. Of the four methods, namely, spreading, membrane filtration, repair detection and replica plating, which have been used for enumeration of bacteria, the last one was the most accurate especially in detecting injured cells.
Biochemical oxygen demand values ranged between 0.6-1.5 mg/l, while chloride ion content was between 354-1240 mg/l.
