Abstract
Abstract
Clarifier operation is a fluid flow problem which, up to now, has been viewed in terms of homogeneous fluid concepts. However, flow in clarifiers is stratified since its density decreases with height. This stratification gives rise to phenomena that do not exist in homogeneous fluids. These appear to cause mixing which decreases removal efficiency. In this paper, we show how by using downstream contractions in the flow, it is possible to virtually double the capacity and increase the removal efficiency of clarifiers.
