Abstract
This paper describes several aspects that are relevant when nitrification and denitrification are integrated in one high rate, compact, biofilm reactor. These features included reactor design, oxygen availability for nitrification, possibilities for forcing the N-removal process over nitrite, and possible emission of nitrogen intermediates. It is concluded that it is possible with a proper process and oxygen control to force the N-removal in a stable manner over nitrite, thereby saving COD need. A possible complication is the risk of emission of NO and N2O which needs further attention in future research.
