Abstract
Surface chemical theory can aid in deriving and quantifying the information needed (equilibrium constants on adsorption, absorption and distribution and kinetic constants related to mass transfer) to predict the distribution, the fate and residence time of trace constituents and pollutants in the environment. Simple surface chemical models for aquatic particulate matter are given in order to illustrate the effect of adsorption onto solid surfaces an an important control on the distribution of trace constituents in natural waters.
