Abstract
The objective of this work was to intensify liquid-solids separation in the primary treatment of urban wastewater. Basically, the process consists of fluidizing a sand bed using grit-removed urban wastewater; the mechanical energy transferred to the suspension enhances the formation of clusters which grow in a maturation zone above the fluidized bed. The unit is also provided with an inclined multitubular settler in which a sludge blanket contributes significantly to pollution removal. The total efficiency is such that the process can compare with classical primary sedimentation, i.e., 60% reduction of total solids, but the required mean residence time is only 10 minutes instead of 120 minutes in a classical device. The total volume required is therefore a tenth of that normally required. The waste sludge also compares with a classical primary sludge, but it has much better settleability.
