Abstract
This research effort was aimed at developing a modern fracture model for pipelines with longitudinal seam weld cracks. An earlier report contains the theoretical framework of the new MAT-8 model, along with the results of an extensive finite element study. The current report presents a state-of-the-art review of fatigue and fracture technology, as it applies to seam-welded pipe. This review places the MAT-8 fracture model in context with pre-existing technology. The benefit of this research is the creation of a significantly more accurate model to predict burst pressure of pipes with longitudinal seam weld flaws. Increased accuracy in predictions will improve the integrity of seam welded pipe. This state-of-the-art review will help to educate pipeline integrity engineers in the field of fracture mechanics.
