Abstract
Using the Hindi version of the Parental Attitude Research Instrument, this study investigated the factorial structure of parental attitudes of 100 rural Indian mothers. Principal component analysis with varimax rotation identified three factors: that is, democratic attitudes; authoritarian,
suppressive, and restricting patterns; rejection of the maternal role and hostility toward husband and children. Results are compared with findings for American, French-Canadian, and urban Indian samples.
