Abstract
Much research has established that sex and intelligence differences in humor appreciation exist and are marked. However, these differences have never been systematically explored in light of the variety of semantic techniques on which humor is based. This research develops a scale of
humor appreciation which includes five distinct semantic types of humor. Successful scale construction indicates that humor appreciation does not vary by type of humor. The scale is applied to a cohort of college students. It is reported that significant sex and intelligence differences do
not exist for all semantic types of humor, nor are all differences in the predicted direction. This research recommends that in the future the correlates of humor appreciation be explored by semantic technique.
