Abstract
SUMMARY
The intraventricular infusion into quail of 6-hydroxydopamine, a drug known to cause degeneration of adrenergic neurones, prevented the subsequent photoperiodic stimulation of testicular growth. This effect was seen in about 20% of the treated birds only but in these, the testicular weight and histology as well as the plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) concentration were similar to the same parameters in non-photostimulated birds. 6-Hydroxydopamine inhibited plasma LH significantly within one day of infusion. The results implicate adrenergic pathways in the photoperiodic control of reproduction.
