Abstract
SUMMARY
Pregnant rats were injected with pontamine blue on the afternoon of day 5 of normal pregnancy to study, by electron microscopy, blastocyst-epithelial contact at implantation sites negative and positive to the dye. Implantation sites negative to the dye contained merely zona-encased blastocysts. Positive sites contained zona-free blastocysts or blastocysts only partly covered by a zona. Remnants of the zona were often observed. At positive sites intimate cell-membrane contacts between blastocyst and uterine epithelium were always noted. The results obtained suggest zona disappearance by uterine lysis and do not contradict the concept that blastocyst—epithelial contact is involved in decidua induction during normal pregnancy.
