Abstract
This two-part study explores the (proto-)hypertextual dynamics in Tablete din Țara de Kuty [Tablets from Kuty Country], an “unusual” narrative published in 1933 by Romanian author Tudor Arghezi. Starting from the Dadaist concept of “indetermination” and searching the roots of the more contemporary narrative “interactivity” in the process, my research delves into the reasons why Tablete din Țara de Kuty can be classified as a proto-hypertext. This first part analyses the Romanian reception of the volume and draws comparisons with a much-debated novel that has also been discussed as a precursor to digital fictions, Julio Cortázar’s Hopscotch, investigation the structures, introductions, and approaches brought forward by both authors.
