Abstract

Abstract The bi- to quadridentate 1,3-dioxolane and 1,4-dioxane phosphane ligands PhnP(CH2C3H5O2)3-n (1, 2). PhP(CH2C4H7O2)2 (3), and [-CH2P(Ph)CH2C4H7O2]2 (4) have been investigated with regard to their efficiency in the carbonylation of methanol to acetic acid using cobalt as a component of the catalyst. While 1, 2 are unstable towards acetic hydrolysis. 3 and 4 lead to methanol conversions of >95%, and selectivities to methyl acetate and acetic acid of 33%, and 60%, respectively.
