Abstract

The syntheses of 1.2-, 1.3- and 1,4-distyrylbenzenes with four or six dodecyloxy chains (1→5a, b, c, 6→13). and the structural conditions for the generation of liquid crystalline states are discussed. 5c forms a thermotropic smectic phase, which is degradated by light and renewed in the dark.
