Abstract

1,2,3-Trioxo-1,3,6,7-tetrahydro- 1H, 5H-benzo[ij]quinolizine (TMCHi) and 2,3-dihydro-1,2,3-trioxo-phenalene (PT) react with 2-aminopyridine to give the 2-pyridylimino-1,3-diones of type 1. However TMCHi and PT react under similar conditions with 3-aminopyridine to yield the corresponding ringclosed products of type 2. From TMCHi with two moles of 2-aminopyridine 2-oxo-1-(2-pyridylamino)-1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-4H-pyrrolo-[3,2,1-ij]quinoline (3) are formed.
