Abstract
The trapping and distribution of deuterons in self-targets consisting of gold, nickel, and copper has been investigated. The analysis of the proton-spectra of the d-d-reaction shows that in gold (5 ... 50 mg/cm2) an inner and a surface part of the D (d,p) T-reaction exists, whereas in a massive gold target all reactions take place within the target; in gold foils having a thickness below 5 mg/cm2 only surface reactions are observed. Likewise, massive nickel and copper targets show only a surface part of the d-d-reaction. An interpretation of these diverse spectra is given. Finally, a simple model of deuterium diffusion in a self-target is developed.
